Exploring Teacher Placement Cities: Tak, Thailand

A foreign English teacher with students in Thailand.

In this blog series, we want to show off some of the cool cities our Greenheart Travelers live in throughout Thailand. Many teachers on this program want to be placed in cities they have heard of in touristy magazines, on Instagram, etc. like Chiang Mai or Phuket, but many of our teachers live in places you’ve likely never heard of before. That’s not to say they aren’t awesome placements – which is why we made this blog series! Cities like Tak allow you to get to know real Thailand, all while living somewhere just as beautiful as the touristy spots.

Today’s blog features Tak. Here are some fun facts about Tak, followed by photos from Greenheart Travelers placed and living in there!

Tak Facts

  • Tak City Population: 20,290
  • Province: Tak Province
  • Region: Western part of Thailand, bordering Myanmar.

I was sad to move away from Chiang Mai but I’m happy now that I am finally settled in my placement town, Tak. Feeling so fortunate to have this classroom view and to see all the smiling faces of my incredible students every day 😊

Woke up this morning feeling very homesick. My friend came to my apartment at 1pm and drug me out of bed. It only took some great company and western comfort in the form of 200 baht pancakes and a macchiato to remind me why I came here. That I can fall in love with a new place without forgetting where I came from. And most importantly, that it’s okay, expected even, to miss home while finding yourself somewhere else.

~cue long, emotional caption~ Had one of the most magical days! Today was “Teacher’s Day” where all of the students in the school honor and give thanks to their teachers. They spend so much time making these ornate flower arrangements with their parents/families and every flower in every arrangement has a specific meaning. They give these arrangements to the teachers to ask for a blessing for their futures. Some flowers mean intelligence…some patience…resilience…etc. It was such a beautiful ceremony and the children in this country really do show so much respect and love for their teachers. Other countries …cough cough America cough cough…. should follow Thailand’s lead when it comes to things like this. I have the best, most supportive co-teachers (especially my Tak Girls, Alex & Jess) I’m so grateful to be here…living in this country…teaching these amazing children. My heart is so very full ❤️🇹🇭 👩🏼‍🏫

To the students of St. Francis Xavier Mathanothai School, It has been such an honor being your teacher for the past 6 months. Thank you for welcoming me into your lives with so many smiles, hugs, and laughs. Thank you for making a tiny town in Thailand feel like home. I will miss hearing “Teachaaa MAH-LEE-ELLE” a million times a day and I will miss all of your beautiful smiles. You are all so incredibly smart and at times, you taught me more than I could ever teach you. I will never forget you. Love, Teacher Mariel 💕

🌹 Cant even put into words how lucky I feel. This journey has been the most rewarding experience of my life 🌹 When I first found out that I would be teaching kindergarteners, I was nervous. Would I be able to handle all of their energy? Do I have what it takes to be a good teacher? Would I fail miserably? Luckily enough, all of my worries were erased on my very first day when I saw all of their little faces staring up at me. These little humans have brought so much joy and genuine happiness into my life and I will miss them all until the end of time ❤️
