Teach English in Japan

Teach English in Japan and gain international teaching experience while living in a country known for its rich traditions, modern cities, and unique cultural experiences. This opportunity is a great fit for adventurous, flexible candidates who want to work with students, build international experience, and immerse themselves in daily life abroad. Positions may be available in elementary, middle, and high school settings, as well as private language centers, with placements in multiple areas across Japan.

Most teaching roles are 12-month positions. Start dates vary by school type, with public schools generally hiring for April and September starts and private language centers hiring throughout the year. Candidates should generally be fluent English speakers, usually ages 21–40, have a bachelor’s degree, 12+ years of schooling in English, a clean criminal record, strong mental and physical health, and a valid passport. A 120-hour TESOL/TEFL certification is typically required, and a driver’s license is required for public school placements.

Teachers may choose a placement-only pathway if already certified, or add TESOL training before placement. An in-person TESOL course in Nagoya is available on select start dates, and an online TESOL course begins on the first Monday of each month. Orientation support is also available in Japan, with optional cultural orientation weekends in Nagoya designed to help participants adjust and connect with other teachers. Placements are available throughout the country in both urban and suburban areas, with many roles located in suburban communities.
