You will receive a weekly meal stipend during your time in Thailand. This will be paid out in weekly installments which comes out to about $39 a week. This doesn’t seem like much, but will be enough to cover your meals for the week. The cost of living in Thailand is very low. For example:
1250 Thai Baht (THB) ~ $39 USD
1 Thai meal (not Western food) = 50-80 THB
3 meals a day for 7 days (at 65 THB/meal) = 1170 THB
You will be expected to work Monday-Friday for about 9 hours with an hour long lunch break in the afternoon. Nights and weekends will be your free time to go to the beach, shop, explore or anything else you want to do! You will also be in Thailand with a group of our teachers and will assist in their arrival.
You will have to check with you universities’ requirements to gain credit for an internship, but it’s definitely possible! Don’t hesitate to reach out if your school has extra requirements, we are happy to make adjustments.
We recommend applying at least 2 months in advance. However, we are accepting interns on a rolling basis so all positions may be filled by the deadline. Applying early for this program is important to secure a spot in your preferred department.
Of course! If you and your friend are accepted onto the program, you can request to room together.
Nope! Your accommodation is included in the program fee. It will be a hostel room shared with another intern of the same gender. Your accommodation will be within walking distance of work.
Nights and weekends will be your free time to explore Hua Hin. However, if you’d like to see more of Thailand, we highly suggest planning time after your internship ends to take a longer vacation to see more!
It is not required that you know Thai before arriving. You will have basic Thai language lessons during the teachers’ orientation. It will definitely help to know a few key phrases before getting on the plane. There are many apps you can use to learn these everyday phrases.
If you can’t decide on a specific intern position, you are more than welcome to indicate you are open to both. During your interview, you will further discuss which position will be best for you as you will ultimately need to decide on one.
No. We work with this same organization to place our teachers in public Thai schools, but this internship is a professional development program aimed at giving our interns experience in a multicultural and international company. If you are interested in teaching English in Thailand, take a look at that program on our website.
You will need to apply for a 90-day Non-Immigrant O visa before arriving in Thailand. Once you are accepted into the program, your program manager will assist you in this process.
Yes! Part of the teachers’ orientation that you participate in is Thai culture and history lessons to learn how to navigate your new surroundings.
The program cost covers things like support from your program manager, the support of 20+ staff in Thailand upon arrival, insurance, orientation and excursions, accommodation during your entire internship, airport pickup, transfers, administrative costs of placement and support, etc. Program staff will be available to answer any questions before and after arrival, and you’ll have access to 24/7 support if needed while in Thailand. Thailand is a very safe country. In fact, most of our participants report feeling safer in Thailand than they do back in their home countries. Just like in any country, you should exercise some caution: be aware of your surroundings, keep an eye on your belongings, don’t walk alone late at night, etc.
You will be covered by comprehensive international medical and accident insurance through Greenheart Travel for your program as part of your program fee. This will cover you for most medical expenses you could incur, like prescriptions, ER visits, doctor visits, dental accidents, and hospitalizations. If you want to extend your coverage to travel after your program, we’ll provide the link to purchase additional coverage.
It is hard to generalize Thai people as a whole, but each year Greenheart Travel sends many LGBTQ travelers to Thailand. As a country, Thailand is generally a very accepting and open-minded country when it comes to LGBTQ+ rights.
Our staff and XploreAsia staff are also very welcoming and accepting of all gender identities.
No, flights are not included in the fee, and you are responsible for arranging your own flights/transportation to Bangkok, Thailand. You may book your flights once you’re accepted onto the program, and we will let you know when you can do so!
Yes, on a day-to-day basis you will have very strong internet provided at the office. You will have access to the wifi at your accommodation for free as well, but it might not be as fast.
Data plans for your cell phone are available for about 800 THB ($20 USD) per month so you will have access to data on your phone as well.
We’ll help you get set up with a plan during orientation. You can bring your own phone to use in Thailand, as long as it is unlocked and able to use a new SIM card. If you aren’t bringing your own phone, you can purchase one in Thailand for about $20 USD. Plans are pre-paid and very inexpensive. Calls to the US costs about 30 cents per minute on the cell phone plans, but we recommend using FaceTime, Skype, or Google Hangouts with wifi (which is free!).
We recommend obtaining a Thai carrier during orientation (we will help with this) and temporarily suspending your plan that you have back home. US-based plans like Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, etc. are VERY expensive to use in Thailand.
