Czech Republic TEFL Certification Course in Prague

This is an intensive 4-week course with job placement assistance for graduates to find paid teaching jobs within Prague after successful completion of the course, as well as aid in acquiring a legal work visa. The course in Prague allows you to gain the required skills to be a confident and successful teacher as well as gain legal employment in a beautiful, Central European country!

All participants must show a serious commitment to learning, and a willingness to plan and teach in groups and to work reflectively. In order to make sure you gain all of the tools and practice you need to teach English, the course is intensive and involves long days in the classroom, plus homework on nights and weekends. Other requirements are:

• At least 18 years of age
• Native English Speaker*
• High school diploma
• Must be open minded, flexible, and adaptable
• Have a laptop (tablets not acceptable)

*Native English speakers or non-native speakers with a C1 certificate with a high school diploma may be academically eligible to join the course.

Students will also be required to bring a notarized copy of a clean criminal background check with them to Prague.

Accommodation is not included in the tuition of your course, but you will be assisted in setting this up prior to your arrival in Prague! There are three main options close to the school depending on your preference for students: Private Apartment (CZK 13,000), Single Room in Shared Apartment (CZK 9,500), Shared Room in Shared Apartment (CZK 6,500).  All housing will include amenities like bed, desk and cookware and rent includes internet and utilities. It requires students bring their own bath towels and toiletries.

These housing options are limited and are filled on a first come, first serve basis so it’s recommended to register early to ensure you’re able to get get a room before they fill.

If the student housing is full, we’ll still assist you in setting up your own housing through other channels.

This course is an intensive 4 weeks and students should expect to be at school for the majority of the day Monday – Friday and to complete homework assignments every night. Hours at the school are typically 10:30am – 7pm. Here is a typical daily schedule:

Although this course should not be taken lightly, as long as you go to class and get your homework done each night, you will do great! It is rare for students to fail this course, but you should be prepared for an intensive 4 weeks of classes, teaching practice, and homework.

International Standards

Most schools, language institutes and Ministries of Education recognize TEFL certifications that meet certain basic standards that are also recommended by leading bodies in the field, including the British Council. These standards reflect those incorporated into a standard, accredited intensive four-week TEFL class and include:

1. At least 100 hours of coursework and training
2. At least 6-20 hours of live practice teaching and observation involving actual ESL students (not peers – no role-playing)
3. External validation and accreditation by a recognized, independent body within the field;

Unlike other Central European countries like France or Spain, Czech Republic easily allows teachers to obtain a legal work visa who want to stay and work for long-term contracts.

There is an abundance of teaching jobs throughout Prague; international and preschools hire teachers year round with peak hiring seasons in January and September.

International school positions usually work with business English students, and teachers should expect to travel around Prague to get to their students each class. International preschools will be working with young students in a regular classroom setting. Some public school positions are open from time to time, but teachers should expect to work in either an international school or a preschool.

6 month contracts with an option to extend are typical for any position in Prague, however, there are a number of short-term contracts available during the summer months for those who need to return home in the Fall but want to gain some international teaching experience.

Teachers usually make around $11-$12/hour depending on their qualifications and if they work full time, should expect to make around $900USD/month which will allow them to live comfortably in Prague.

Where will I do my practicum?

You will do your live student teaching and observation at the TEFL school mostly with Czech adults from the community.

Is Prague safe?

Prague is generally a very safe city compared to other European cities but it’s advisable to use the same safety precautions you use in your hometown to keep yourself safe. Always be aware of pickpocketing when near major tourist destinations like Charles Bridge and Old City Square as well as small-scale scams in restaurants and in taxis. Be sure to educate yourself on these tourist scams to be aware of them when you move to Prague.

How do I get to the school when I land?

Airport pickup and transfer to your accommodation is included in your program fee so the school will set this up for you. All you have to do is look for your name with the driver after your leave baggage claim.

Do I need a visa?

For the TEFL course, a tourist visa is sufficient as it usually allows you to stay in the country for 90 days. If you plan to stay in Prague to teach, you will start the process of gaining your legal work permit during the course which will involve one trip to a Czech consulate in Austria or Germany. The school staff is very familiar with this process and will help you if you decide to apply for the work permit.

Do I need to speak Czech?

It is not required to speak Czech as many Prague natives speak English fairly well. However, learning a little Czech while you’re there won’t hurt and lessons are easy to find!

Is it easy to get around?

Yes! Getting around in Prague is manageable by foot or by public transportation! Prague’s public transportation, which includes a metro, tram and buses, is one of the best in Europe as it covers a large portion of the city and some of the outskirts. You will use the tram to get to and from school from your accommodation every day so you will get used to it quickly.

Taxis are also readily available although students should be aware that some taxi drivers will try to scam non-Czech riders for a higher fare so it’s important to know exactly where you are going to try and avoid some of these scams. 

What’s the cost of living?

The cost of living in Prague is likely a little less than what you are used to. As long as you are working 25-35 hours a week, you will be making enough to live comfortably. Here are some examples of typical costs in Prague:

How much money should I bring to get started?

Prague is generally a less expensive city than many other Central European cities like Paris or Barcelona so we recommend bringing at least $500USD (12000CZK) to get you through the first month of the course. You can limit the amount you spend by avoiding eating out for dinner every night and instead cooking for yourself, but Prague has a ton of great bars and restaurants so you might want to budget a little to explore when you’re not in class on nights and weekends.

If you are planning on staying after to teach, you will want to bring more as you will need money to hold you over until you get your first paycheck. Generally, you will need to put a deposit down on an apartment or pay for nights at a hostel until you find an apartment as well as have the funds to do a visa run to Austria or Germany to complete your work visa. We recommended bringing $500 for the month of your course and at least another $1000 if you plan to stay and get settled.

Will I be able to find a job teaching English in Prague once I’m done with my course?

Yes! You will receive assistance from the TEFL school staff to help you look for work during your course. Generally, students don’t have a problem finding a job, but they will have a problem picking which job they should choose as there are so many teaching jobs available throughout the year.

2. Sign the Terms and Conditions Document (Approximately 10 Minutes): These are our basic policies like cancellation policies, deferral policies, etc.

3. Fill out your Registration Form (Approximately 10 Minutes): Fill out a simple form to formally register for your course.

4. Submit your $600 Payment (Approximately 5 Minutes): A payment is required in order to apply for the program and is subtracted from your total program fee. After you submit your payment, we will start to arrange your arrival details!

5. Schedule your video interview! (Approximately 15 Minutes): Once you have submitted your online application and paid your application fee, you will be asked to schedule a video interview with a Greenheart Travel representative.

6. You’re accepted! Woohoo! We are usually able to accept people within a 1-2 weeks of their interviews.

6. Balance: Your remaining tuition balance will be due 6 weeks prior to your course start date.
