Leaving my Home Country for the First Time

    By: Kennedi-Grace

Kennedi-Grace attended Greenheart’s Teen Summer Language Camp South Korea program during the summer of 2024 as a First Time Traveler Scholarship Winner.

Leaving my country for the language camp South Korea program was hard, but leaving my home was difficult. As a frequent flyer, I felt confident about my ability to navigate the booking, check-in, and airport mapping process but was still nervous of all the unknowns of traveling by myself. But as I sit three to four hours early to my flight, I realize that it’s okay to be nervous because at least I was prepared. I’m still unsure what I was anxious about exactly. Whether it was because I was leaving America for a foreign country like South Korea or because I was traveling to it by myself. Maybe it’s a bit of both, but here are some things I did to ease the anxious feelings.

    Early? No, prepared.
Living in Hawaii one thing that was a little difficult was finding a flight from this small island to halfway around the world. I eventually found a flight that met the program requirements but it was from another island through a different airline that wasn’t stationed on my island. So I booked my own flight, for the first time, and I booked the earliest flight out. I landed five hours before my direct flight to South Korea and will admit it would seem early for any normal person that has flown frequently but it didn’t feel that way to me. I felt prepared. Having the time in between helped because I no longer felt like I was rushing. I felt like I had time to make a mistake. Obviously, you hope for everything to go smoothly but sometimes you have to prepare for the worst to be grateful for the best.

    Two Weeks Ahead of Schedule

Here’s a couple of things I did at least two weeks before my departure:
    1. I packed everything
    2. I made a to-do list
    3. I confirmed all my flight information
    4. I looked at the airport maps for the places I was going to

As soon as the language camp South Korea program sent me the packing list I immediately checked the weather forecast and packed it according to the packing list. The packing list helped me pack smart instead of overpacking and helped ease the stress of being unprepared for the trip. Then I created my Morning-Of List this is a list that I check off before I leave the house to ensure I won’t leave anything important at home while “rushing” out the door. I did the exact opposite of rushing out the door the morning of my departure. The morning-of, I got up to my alarm, which was set 45 minutes before I planned to leave the house. Then I got ready and sat down on the kitchen table to have a cup of tea with my grandma before I left home for two weeks. Just before I left the house for the ride to the airport I did a final check through of the Morning-Of List. I felt at ease even though I was about to depart from my home to a whole new world all by myself.

    Word of advice

To future first-time travelers – it’s okay to feel nervous and anxious, I would even encourage it because then you’d be able to create your own preparedness routine. Don’t worry about being too early because that gives you time to prepare yourself mentally. And one more thing, the morning of my departure I still somehow forgot to eat breakfast. No one is perfect, but you can be prepared

How to Spend Your Summer in Korea as a Teen

With its strong global influence, South Korea has become an increasingly popular country to visit. Everyone has hopped on the k beauty trend in the past few years, and we’re all well aware of the K-pop phenomenon. But for those who want to have a deeper understanding of Korean culture and language, it’s time to travel this summer.

We are launching a 2-week Teen Summer Language Camp in South Korea. This program is exclusive for those between 16-19 years old that have anywhere from a beginner to an advanced level of the Korean language.

This isn’t a camp in the traditional sense. You will live with a host family in Incheon while attending a Korean school specifically to learn the language. There are activities throughout the week, and Fridays are dedicated to a full-day excursion, with optional weekend activities. This includes attending a K-pop concert, Taekwondo lessons, and a visit to the Gyeongbok Palace.

This is perfect for teens who want to:

    • Have an authentic cultural immersion experience
    • Meet others from around the world and locals from Korea
    • Live with a host family

This is also great for students who want to study abroad but can’t travel for a long period of time. You even have the opportunity to gain academic credit for this course!

This summer our program will run from July 11, 2021 – July 25, 2021.

Do you identify as LGBTQ+? Wondering if this program will welcome you? Read our LGBTQ+ FAQs to see how we are committed to offering a safe and inclusive experience for everyone.

Okay, you’re sold. So how much is it?

The course is $2,840 and includes:

    • 12 hours of language classes per week
    • Airport pickup and drop-off upon arrival and departure from the Incheon International Airport (ICN)
    • Host family accommodation
    • 2 meals per day (Breakfast & Dinner)
    • Comprehensive medical/accident insurance
    • Track-specific cultural excursions & activities
    • Weekend excursions to beach or nearby cities
    • 24-hour in-country and emergency support
    • More!

    Apply ASAP

This is a program is in high demand and is filling quickly. Because there are limit spots, once the program is full we cannot take any more people. The best way to secure a spot is to apply and get your documents in order before someone else.

    How to Apply

Fill out this initial form (don’t worry, it takes 5 minutes), then you’ll be send an email with further instructions for applying in our application portal. Once you start your application, you’ll be asked for a $300 application fee. This is part of the overall fee, not an additional sum. This is so we know you’re serious and will reserve your spot!

Finish up the rest of the application (the longer part) where you will be asked to write about yourself and why you want to go abroad.

After you submit your application, your program manager will reach out about your acceptance. This is where the second $300 commitment payment is due (again, subtracted from the overall fee). This is where you are confirmed! You can expect to receive your host family placement 1-2 weeks prior to your start date.

Do not hesitate to reach out throughout this process. That’s what we’re here for! Click here to schedule a call.

  • Ready to Learn a Language This Summer? What You Need to Know About COVID-19 and Our Teen Language Camps

Ready to Learn a Language This Summer? What You Need to Know About COVID-19 and Our Teen Language Camps

Yes, 2020 has been a year. So just like you, we can’t wait for a great Summer 2021. And as much as you’re ready to jump on a plane now and experience a Japanese tea ceremony in Fukuoka or watch gelato melt from your cone in Florence, we bet you and your parents have lots of questions before you apply for our Teen Language Camp programs. (Wondering what a Teen Language Camp is? Here’s a brief explainer.)

You can always find the latest COVID-19 programming information here.

So, here’s what you need to know about applying for a Teen Language Camp and traveling abroad in Summer 2021.

We’re still planning to run Summer 2021 Teen Language Camp programs.

Currently, with the exception of Costa Rica, U.S. tourists are not yet permitted to enter our Teen Language Camp destinations. (Our Teen Language Camp students don’t apply for student visas and are granted 90-day tourist permissions upon arrival – this won’t be a piece of paper. It’s just a stamp in your passport!) At the time of this writing, we’re hopeful that entry restrictions will change soon. We’ll keep you updated every step of the way.

Our applications will open on November 15, 2020, and the final deadline to secure your spot for Summer 2021 is on March 15, 2021. Ready to apply? Hit this button to receive a link to the application.

But like the rest of the world, we sadly can’t predict the future, and we don’t know what 2021 will hold. If we’re unable to run your program due to health and safety or entry restrictions or requirements like mandatory government quarantines, we’ll cancel your start date six weeks prior. You’d then have options to defer, switch to a new program, or request a partial refund. Read the full COVID-19 Cancellation and Refund Policy here.

We’ll keep you updated with any and all COVID-19-related health and safety guidelines for your destination.

Closer to your start date, you will participate in an online pre-departure training with a Greenheart Travel staff member. The details will be provided to  you upon acceptance onto the program. During this online training, the Greenheart Travel staff member will provide any specific COVID-19 guidelines or entry requirements (such as getting a COVID-19 test 72 hours prior to departure). All students will be required to adhere to any local or federal government guidelines while on program, such as wearing a mask and maintaining six feet of distance with anyone outside of this program. These will be discussed with students during the online pre-departure as well as upon arrival. Guidelines, requirements, and restrictions change frequently, so we will give you the most accurate information as possible as close to your start date as possible.

If you get COVID-19 while abroad, we have protocols in place.

The protocols will vary by country,  but we’ll give you the most up-to-date information during your online pre-departure training. (For example, if you get COVID-19, you’d be expected to quarantine with your host family until you’re COVID-19 free.) And remember, all students have 24/7 emergency number to call in case of any concerns, and you’ll be counting on support from both the local in-country staff and long-distance from our Chicago offices, as well as your host family. Another great piece of news? Part of your program fee goes towards comprehensive medical and accident insurance that covers COVID-19.

At Greenheart Travel, we’re committed to safely running Summer 2021 Teen Language Camps. The world has brought many twists and turns this year, but you can always count on our support of your cultural exchange experience.
